Breathe Easy in Your Home

How to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Outdoor air quality may be out of your control, but you have the ability to keep the air quality in your home healthy.  Children, people with asthma, and the elderly may be especially sensitive to indoor pollutants, but others may be affected by air quality after prolonged exposure.

Here are some simple tips to improve the air quality in your home.

    1. Keep your floors clean. Vacuum and mop floors regularly.
    2. Use door mats and remove shoes at exterior doors to reduce the amount of debris tracked into the home from outside.
    3. Maintain a healthy humidity level by using humidifiers or an integrated system in your home.
    4. Do not allow smoking or vaping inside. The smoke is unhealthy and clings to fabrics.
    5. Conduct regular radon tests in your home.
    6. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home.
    7. Limit the artificial smells that are introduced. Some fragrant items to avoid include cleaning solutions, laundry detergent and aerosols.
    8. Open doors and windows to let fresh air in.
    9. Don’t use wood burning fireplaces, the smoke can cause breathing issues.
    10. Add air purifying plants to your home, such as Spider Plants, Dracaenas, Golden Pathos, Areca Palms, Boston Ferns, and Chrysanthemums.
    11. Air purifiers are useful in smaller spaces or can be integrated into the home HVAC system.
    12. Change the air filter regularly in your HVAC system.
    13. Have the air conditioning unit cleaned by a professional annually.
    14. Have the ductwork throughout the house cleaned regularly.
    15. Clean up after animals on floors and furniture. Animal dander and hair can cause breathing issues.
    16. Use the exhaust fan while cooking to remove excess smoke or scents.

Improve the quality of the air in your home to reduce health issues.  As shown above, there are many things you can do, but you may also want to talk to a professional about cleaning, maintaining or installing HVAC equipment to increase air quality at all times.
