Keep Your Home Warm and Safe

Tips to Using a Space Heater Safely

Before you use a space heater be sure to read all instructions on the unit and educate yourself about the use of a space heater. Space heaters can be a wonderful addition to your regular heating unit, but only if they are used responsibly. One of the most important factors in keeping a home safe with a space heater is the placement of the heater. Anything that is flammable should not be near the unit. Watch out for draperies, bedding, clothing, carpeting, and paper materials, just to name a few items.

Once you have a space heater be certain that all parts are working properly. Placement, as previously mentioned, is of the utmost importance. The unit should never be placed on anything but a flat stable surface. Do not place it on furniture that can overheat, possibly starting a fire. Be certain that the unit is plugged directly into an outlet and not using an extension cord.

When the unit is purchased be certain that an automatic shut-off is one of the features that is included in the space heater. If the unit is accidently knocked over by a child or an animal, it will automatically turn off causing no harm or damage. When using a space heater, it is very important that the heater is never left unattended. Some people may plan to keep the heater on all night while sleeping and that is improper use and highly discouraged. It is wise to take the chill off the room and turn the heater off while sleeping. When the heater is not in use be certain that it is unplugged and stored in a safe place. The space heater is a great tool, but can be dangerous if not used properly.
