Keep your Home Cool without Breaking the Bank

Tricks to Keeping it Cool During the Heat

Summer time means heat which can lead to dreaded higher energy bills due to running the air conditioning. There are multiple things you can do to help cool your home and save money. Try these out this summer to see how much of a difference they make in your home’s temperature and your energy bill.

Interior Tricks:
• Ventilate your home with windows, portable fans, ceiling fans, or whole house fans. Setting ceiling fans to run counter-clockwise pulls the cooler air in the space. Open the windows at night to let the cooler air inside.
• Ensure you have the proper amount of insulation in your home to keep the cool, or hot, air in instead of escaping out the roof.
• Keep your blinds and curtains closed during the day to block out the heat of the sun. Blackout curtains can be really effective in limiting the heat allowed in.
• Do housework in the evenings. Running the washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher adds heat to the home that only increases the temperature during the day.

Exterior Tricks
• Take cooking outside! Use your grill instead of the stove or oven to keep the temperature in the house down.
• On the exterior of your home, add awnings or shutters to help block sunlight from entering the home. Plant trees or large shrubs that will add shade on windows that get direct sunlight.
• Installing new windows with UV rated filters.

Air Conditioning Units:
• Energy.gov states that you can reduce AC energy use by 20-50% by installing a high-efficiency unit.
• Adjustable and programmable smart thermostats can help save you money. You can adjust the temperature based on the activity in the home so it isn’t running more than necessary.
• Change air filters monthly to keep it running efficiently.
• Set the thermostat at 78 degrees. Don’t air-condition unused rooms. Close vents and doors to those rooms to push more cool air into occupied spaces in the home.

Don’t let the stress of higher energy bills make you suffer in addition to the heat. Try some of these tricks to cooling your home without using the air conditioning unit. You can also learn more at https://www.energy.gov/articles/energy-saver-101-infographic-home-cooling.
