The Cause

Window condensation is caused when excessive moisture in the house condenses on your windows where the cold outside air meets the warm inside air.

The Problem

Window condensation can cause peeling wallpaper and paint, warped hardware and black mold.

There are things you can do in your home to reduce window condensation.  These tips may help, but you may need to contact a professional HVAC company to assist in eliminating window condensation.

1. Reducing the humidity inside your home

• Install a hygrometer (a device that measures moisture levels in the air)
• Use exhaust fans and vents
• Take plants outside
• Line dry clothes outside instead of running your dryer
• Close doors when bathing and cooking
• Use lids when cooking
• Turn off any humidifiers
• Use a dehumidifier

2. Managing the Temperature

• Keep your house at the ideal temperature
• Install weather stripping on all exterior doors
• Seal cracks around windows and doors
• Install a heat recovery ventilator
• Install storm windows

3. Improving Ventilation and Circulation

• Keep doors and windows open, when feasible
• Open the drapes
• Use fans to move air around
